Dear Diary,
As an African American woman it is very difficult to find jobs and live in today's society.  Bur God has answered my prayers and President Johnson has established the Civil Rights Act of 1964.  This act makes it illegal for one to be prejudiced against any race or sex in the work force.  I am supporting my three beautiful children and this act has made it so we can eat on a regular basis.  If I keep saving hopefully Jimmy will be able to tryout for the football team at school.  It is hard to keep living like these but I couldn't imagine my life any other way.  Thank you God for blessing me with three beautiful children.
Dear Diary,
I never knew how helping others could make a person feel so much better about themselves.  After joining president Johnson's, Volunteers in Service to America, I feel like I have a higher purpose in life.  Prior to joining I began doing drugs and getting involved with the wrong people, but now that I have experienced this feeling there is no better high.  Having this impact and seeing your progress in your own community on a daily basis makes you truly appreciate what life has to offer.  President Johnson, thank you so much for enlightening me and illustrating that just because it's your life doesn't mean you are the most important thing in it.
Dear Diary,
Who knew I would be the first in my family to make it to eighty years old.  Although I feel pretty accomplished my medical expenses have been truly disgusting considering I have no choice in whether I pay or not.  Thank the Lord Himself that President Johnson's new Medicare policy passed.  It's about time that after all the hard work I've done as a veteran and a former factory employee I have benefits.

5 Paragraph essay

Americans lived in a time when the United States was undergoing numerous changes.   The country was split and opinions were brewing rapidly.  During the 1960s, not everything was looking up for the American culture.  Americans witnessed new decisions about rights given to those of a different race.  Presidents were being elected or released from office and voting rights were being  discussed often.  Americans should have learned that they had a voice in society.  By speaking up they could have had a day in how the society was being run in the 1960s.

Americans during this time experienced changes to the society.  Segregation was very prominent in the United States.  It mainly took over the Southern states.  The NAACP was formed which was a national association that helped get rid of segregation. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  was the major figure for the African-American community.  He gave numerous speeches that inspired the people to push for change.  Many Americans did not see it as a postive movement but it was all based on opinion.  He wanted the society to be treated fairly and equally.  The Civil Rights Act of 1964 was passed and the society benefitted tremendously.  The federal government could now regulate segregation everywhere.  It was no longer allowed in public places.  Americans should have learned that integration is important.  Every race that works together helps the overall society.  All citizens have a voice and they should have used it when segregation was occurring.  During the Civil Rights Movement as well,  a prominent figure name Harvey Milk pushed for homosexual power.  He campaigned for it in hopes of gaining support.  Citizens at the time had a hard time accepting change and allowing homosexuals to be in the sociey. People should be open to diversity and many struggle to accept it even today.  Americans were stubborn when it came to branching out and accepting change.  The slow integregation of African-Americans and other races eventually helped our society.

The VietnamWar made a huge impact on the United States after they became involved.  The US tried to stay clear of foreign affairs but were eventually drawn in.  Vietam before the war was nationalistic.  The government formed many political parties that would run the country.  The major conflict in the war was the North invading the South.  The North Vietnamese were Communist and the South was not. The United States quickly learned that they would have to participate in order to keep the South from becoming Communist.  Americans should have learned that not everyone wanted to go to war.  The US never won the battle but lost many lives. The draft was unfair because it selected those young white males.  Many wanted to go to college and there was no female selection or any other race going to represent the United States.  President Nixon tried to end the war by selecting certain positions for his staff.  They would be in charge of improving relationships with foreign nations.  Unfortunately this was not successful.  The Vietnam War had no victor.  Many lives were lost and greater tensions began.  No one viewed the war as being a good thing for our country.  The US citizens should have learned to make better relations with foreign countries and host meetings.  Instead they took the war on full force and destroyed many cultures and lives.  The presidential elections effected our country in the 1960s.  When Nixon became president he tried to help the United States by establishing a foreign policy.  He negotiated with the Soviet Union and discussed the oil embargo with other nations.  When the Watergate Scandal occurred, many Americans could not trust the government let alone the president.  They could not believe that he had been seen as a perfect man.  The Americans had hoped that the future presidents woul be honest when they entered office.  Outside wars and presidential elections effected our nation tremendously during the 1960s.  People wanted to change and improve the society and trust that the government would make smarter decisions when dealing with foreign affairs.

During the 1960s, the environment was become polluted and it had to be changed.  Our world was become polluted with many chemicals.  Pesticides were being used on our plants which was causing harm to animals and humans.  Pollutants were being produced into the air by new factories and cars.  These fossil fuels were not helping create a cleaner environment.  American's health was being put at risk and many would be prone to getting sick.  Rachel Carson was an important American leader that wrote a book concerning the use of pesticides and DDT.  The government started to take action after many were becoming sick.  Earth day was created as a national movement that is still celebrated today. Americans took away that they needed a day to save the earth and environment by cleaning it.  They would throw all trash away or clean up any that they say.  This tradition is still carried out today.  President Nixon signed the National Environmental Policy Act.  The  EPA controlled pollution standards and regulated activities that had to do with the environment.  Overtime, citizens wanted to be able to purchase vehicles as long as they were being regulated.  Solar panels were being made in order to reduce the amount of energy and cost being put into place.  DDT was a pesticide used on plants that would kill unwanted insects but hurt the plants.    The government was searching for other alternatives to use.  In today's world, cars have been made to use less fossil fuels. People have learned from the past that in order to create a cleaner environment something has to change.  Cars are being made with hybrid engines as well as battery charged cars.  This saves many money and the use of fossil fuels.  The past of the 1960s helped create a better look on what needed to change today.  The government knows how to create cars that help the economy as well as controlling the use of chemicals.

The  United States past was a time when everything was going under change.  We were involved in foreign affairs that we tried to stay out of.  Our environment was become unsafe and the government needed to step in immediately.  Tensions were becoming higher and the United States become an huge target.  Segregation was slowly fading away and all races were being integrated.  Americans learned who to trust and put into office.  They became smarter in creating a healthier environment.  Today our society is still undergoing change but there is a sense of working together and that is what makes the United States a strong country.  Segregation, war, presidential elections, and the environment have all changed and are either completely gone or still being improved on today.  Americans learned from the past in order to create a better present and future.
